Deputy Reel

From WTVR 6 in Richmond, Virginia: Deputy Death :

It’s a tale of two hearts connected by the graveyard shift.

A deputy meets his sweetheart 7 months ago. She was a clerk at at a Ladysmith gas station he frequently stopped in to buy a drink or use the restroom.

The two hit it off and had everything going for them until Monday. Deputy Leonard Reel was on his way to meet his girlfriend Liz Ryan, when he got a call to respond to Nelson Hill Road for a fatal traffic accident. Fourty minutes later, the deputy finds out that the victim is his girlfriend. Her three year old daughter Ciara was also injured and taken to Mary Washington Hospital.

Two days passed and the stress was just too much. Shortly after Reel’s sister leaves his house, Reel uses his service weapon to kill himself. Sheriff Tony Lippa says his deputy left a note behind saying in part that he couldn’t live without Liz.

A memorial service will be held for both Deputy Reel and Liz Ryan at Bowling Green United Methodist Church on Friday night.

Armed robbery in Carmel Church.

From the Richmond Times-Dispatch: Caroline store clerk wounded:

A convenience-store clerk was shot during an attempted armed robbery in Caroline County this morning.

Three males wearing ski masks entered an Exxon station in the Carmel Church area around 1:50 a.m. and demanded money, Caroline Sheriff Tony Lippa said.

The gunman fired one warning shot at the clerk after his demands were not met, then shot the clerk once in the hand. The clerk was transported to a local hospital for treatment of an injury that was not life-threatening, Lippa said.

The suspects fled in a tan-colored minivan, possibly a Ford Windstar, and headed in an unknown direction. They are described as three males, with the gunman wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with “South Pole” on it.

Anyone with information is asked to call an anonymous tip line at (804) 633-1133.

Another drug dealer behind bars…

From Caroline County Sheriff’s Office: More Drug Arrests in Caroline:

William J. Coleman, 36, of Bowling Green, a suspect accused of transporting illegal drugs from Boston and distributing those drugs in the Bowling Green area has been captured.

The Caroline County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at Coleman’s residence in Lakeshore Trailer Park on August 3, 2007, which resulted in the seizure of a sizeable quantity of narcotics.  Coleman was able to escape capture at the time of the search warrant.  Caroline Narcotics Officers worked in conjunction with Detectives from the Massachusetts State Police and the Chicopee, Massachusetts Police Department to locate and arrest Coleman.

Coleman is currently being held without bond in Massachusetts.  As a result of this investigation he has been charged with additional drug related charges by the Chicopee Massachusetts Police Department.

Following Coleman’s court appearance for the charges in Massachusetts Coleman will be extradited back to Caroline County in order to face prosecution for drug distribution charges stemming from the Caroline Sheriff’s Office investigation.

Sheriff Lippa said, “This apprehension was a success in large part due to tips and information provided by the community.  I would like to give a special thanks to all of the citizens that continue to assist the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office in our fight against crime and our war on illegal drugs.”

Search operations at The Four Winds Club, Caroline County

Virginia State Police search helicopterThis happened Saturday morning (July 21, 2007) but I was waiting on a update on the woman’s status before posting:

At approximately 0245 (2:45 a.m.), a call was received from a visitor of The Four Winds Club, located at 2350 Skinkers Neck Drive, Rappahannock Academy, reporting that a woman had gone missing approximately three hours ago and was last seen along the Rappahannock River.

Virginia State Police search helicopterThe Caroline County Sheriff’s Office coordinated and helped to conduct search operations of the campground while personnel from the Port Royal Volunteer Fire Department conducted search operations in the Rappahannock River using a boat and a body heat detection device. Personnel from the Bowling Green Volunteer Rescue Squad and the Ladysmith Volunteer Fire Department rescue/dive team also responded.

Virginia State Police search helicopterThe Virginia State Police dispatched resources including a State Police tracking dog and a helicopter (N36VA) from their Aviation Unit which used forward looking infrared to conduct a search of the forest and open areas.

At day break, fire and rescue volunteers went door-to-door asking residents if they had seen the missing woman without success before they were relieved at approximately 0900 (9:00 a.m.). The woman was eventually located and was unharmed.

Hot pursuit in Caroline County.

From Fredericksburg.com [photo credit: Lippa for Sheriff]: Woman faces charges in two localities:

2006LippanohatA Fredericksburg woman was charged yesterday with hit-and-run and eluding police in episodes in two localities.

Beth A. Egnar, 43, was charged with DUI and eluding police in Caroline County and was served a warrant for a felony hit-and-run in Fredericksburg Sunday night.

[…]

Caroline Sheriff Tony Lippa said his office got a call about 11 p.m. Sunday to be on the lookout for Egnar. A man had called 911 and told Fredericksburg police that he was following a woman who struck his vehicle and drove off.

Fredericksburg spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said Egnar was driving a 2003 Subaru wagon when she allegedly hit a Dodge pickup truck on State Route 2.

Lippa said his department put out two sets of road spikes on Route 2 before they were finally able to stop the car, which was southbound.

Lippa said the car stopped for police at an intersection just north of Bowies Pond with all four tires flattened and surrounded by six to seven police cars.

Good thing Lippa bought those spike strips (at no cost to the county by using drug seizure money).
