You are lumping in South Carolina's reasons with that of the entire South. I'm no neo-Confederate, but I am a History major, and the causes of both the individual states and the individual citizens vary. Slavery was the major factor as a whole - but more-so among the lower South states, whereas Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee would not have went out on the basis of slavery alone.

Nice post. There was a guy from the American Prospect talking about this revisionism and he said some, frankly brilliant stuff on the subject including that alot of southerners don't want to face the truth about what the Confederacy fought for.

Now, I wasn't raised in the south but I have roots there. My ancestry goes back to folks who fought on the side of the Confederacy. This is not something I have trouble accepting. I don't damn my ancestors, but I don't deny the obvious reality that the Confederacy was formed to keep black people in chattel slavery. This revisionism seems like there is a strong desire to have the South be something to be proud of and the Confederacy part of some righteous heritage. Racism certainly is still alive and perhaps Obama's presidency is triggering something. It's hard to tell, because guys like Haley Barbour who engage in revisionism are so hard to follow and make no sense.

Advice to people still in the South and who are of reasonable persuasion: If you de-emphasize the horrible elements of your past, you do have alot to be proud of. You produced Johnny Cash, for goodness' sake. Nashville is one of the richest areas of creativity I've been in.
