Follow-up: Representative Rob Wittman wants to ban the sale of Playboy and Penthouse at military PX’s.

Wittman is a cosponsor. (For details on the original story, click here.)

Apparently, Wittman (who has no military experience whatsoever) believes that men (and women) that have volunteered to serve in the military are incapable of deciding what they want to read.

They can apparently volunteer to serve in the greatest armed forces in the world with the possibility that they will make the ultimate sacrifice, but are unable to decide what is appropriate for themselves to read.

Men (and women) who serve in combat zones and see death on a routine basis will apparently have their precious minds, their virgin eyes and ears, warped by the likes of Penthouse and Playboy.

Does Wittman think that because some soldiers, sailors, airmen, or Marines see the likes of Penthouse and Playboy that, to quote the bill’s sponsor, Paul Broun of Georgia, it will “escalat[e] the number of violent, sexual crimes, feeding a base addiction, eroding the family as the primary building block of society, and denigrating the moral standing of our troops both here and abroad”? (see also: Straw man)

Is our military that out of control?

And as Wittman is so eager to point out, twenty percent (20%) of his district’s residents “are military or retired military personnel”, so how many of them support this stupidity?

Do the Marines at MCB (Marine Corp Base) Quantico think it’s a Congressional prerogative to control what they read? What about the soldiers (et al.) at Fort A.P. Hill? The sailors at NSWC (Naval Surface Warfare Center) Dahlgren? What about the airmen at Langley AFB (Air Force Base) which is right outside his district (and I’m sure some of the base personnel live inside his district)?

And how comforting that Wittman will be on the subcommittee that does the first hearing on the bill (that would be the House Armed Services Committee’s Subcommittee on Readiness).

Welcome to the Republican Nanny State.

FYI: Randy Forbes (R) of Virginia’s Fourth Congressional District and Virgil Goode (R) of Virginia’s Fifth Congressional District are also cosponsors of this piece of stupidity legislation.

  1. I am still laughing.

After the North Koreans killed Art Boniface and the other officer (name escapes me) in Korea in 1976, I was sitting in my quonset hut, track outside, with my weapon, hand grenades and atropine waiting for the whistle of incoming artillery because we were in range. My wife called me and ask me what I was doing. I said I was looking at Playboy – especially at Elizabeth Ray’s (remember the good Congressman’s ex-wife?) boobs.

I wouldn’t take that away from a soldier. Too bad I wasn’t nominated and elected when I ran. So it goes.

  2. Maybe the Honorable Representative might better serve his fellow man by not using threats and intimidation of lawsuit against a citizen who merely points out and sends him a link to what “I’m surrounded by Idiots” writes about the Honorable Representative.

In other news, Robert Wittman (or one of his helpers) doesn’t know how
to drive. A Jeep Cherokee with House of Delegates tag 99 (as in the
99th House of Delegates district) was seen flying through Port Royal
at what appeared to be around 40 MPH (the speed limit once you turn
off of Route 301 is 25 MPH). He was seen swerving around on the road
    as well.

    Email he sent back:

    Dear Tom:

Be very careful about making accusations without basis in fact for there are
laws that hold you accountable for false accusations. The license plate
number for House of Delegates plates relates to seniority not the district
represented by the Delegate. So the House of Delegates plate 99 does not
belong to me nor do I or my staff own a Jeep Cherokee. This information can
be easily verified by the Clerk of the House of Delegates and DMV.

    Rob

Apparently he can’t discern a comment on someone else’s blog from my own comments. So he makes useless threats, he can’t follow through on.

  3. I wonder whose Jeep Grand Cherokee Wittman’s posing in front of here?:

That photo was taken during the 2005 HOD campaign.

And what other member of the House of Delegates would be driving through his district on election day? Remember, Wittman had already thrown in his name for the Republican nomination for the First Congressional District before election day (November 6), and all of his HOD district is part of the 1st CD.

And as if the DMV or the House Clerk would go around giving out Delegates’ license plate information.
